CAMARILLO : City Joins Suit Over Tax Revenue

Share

Camarillo has joined the nine other Ventura County cities in a lawsuit against the county for withholding more than $1.3 million in property tax revenues.

At a meeting Wednesday, City Council members voted unanimously to challenge the county, which has withheld property tax payments from cities and school districts to cover unpaid fees for booking prisoners into Ventura County Jail and for collecting property taxes.

Attorney J. Robert Flandrick, who is representing all 10 cities, claims that the county has violated state law because it failed to notify the cities before it withheld the money.

“The county cannot withhold payments due to the cities if they present a written objection within 30 days,” Flandrick said.

The county’s action might cost Camarillo more than $96,000, said Joyce Marsh, assistant finance director. The cost of the lawsuit will be shared among the cities on the basis of population.
