SIMI VALLEY : Reagan Library Asks City to Service Road
The Simi Valley City Council will consider a proposal today to include a section of roadway that leads to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in the city’s street system.
The Ronald Reagan Library Foundation has requested that a 3,400-foot section of Presidential Drive be dedicated to the city because it does not have the facilities to maintain the road, city officials said.
The roadway, which connects with Madera Road at the west end of the city, is located on county property.
Mayor Greg Stratton and Councilman Bill Davis said the city is willing to accept the dedication as long as the Reagan Foundation is willing to pay for the cost of maintaining the road and the landscaping next to it.
“We don’t mind taking the road,” Stratton said. “But generally we don’t accept landscaping costs as part of any dedication.”
The Reagan Foundation initially suggested that a special assessment district be established that would have required property owners along the roadway to share in the annual maintenance and landscape costs, estimated to be $8,000. But the foundation later withdrew the proposal.
Stephen M. Blitz, an attorney representing the foundation, said Friday that the organization will probably accept the city’s conditions.
The presidential library is scheduled to open Nov. 4.
