FILLMORE : Balanced Budget for Schools Approved

Share

Fillmore Unified School District’s Board of Trustees adopted a $13.5-million balanced budget for 1991-92 that will maintain current programs and staff by sacrificing cost-of-living pay increases.

The budget accepted by the board Tuesday was unchanged from a version presented by staff last month for the 3,300-student district.

About $70,000 has been cut from supply and maintenance allotments, and a cap on the district’s contribution to employee medical benefits was retained.

A year-end surplus of $313,000 for 1990-91 was predicted by Barbara Spieler, director of business services. Spieler said the extra money was the result of greater income and lower expenses than projected in the 1990-91 budget.

Spieler said the surplus would probably be given to teachers and staff as a one-time bonus to defray the cost of medical benefits. In the past, Fillmore Unified has paid all employee medical insurance costs. But officials said that employees will pay out of pocket for the first time this year because costs have risen above the district’s limit.
