SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

The Santa Paula Elementary School District Thursday balanced its budget for next year by eliminating nearly a dozen full-time teaching positions at its seven schools.

“There have been people that have been in the district for many years and they have indicated that this is the most difficult year they have ever had,” Assistant Supt. Bonnie Bruington said.

District trustees approved the $13.1-million budget Thursday for the district’s six elementary and one middle school after cutting more than $500,000 from educational and other positions, district officials said. The cuts eliminated 11 full-time and two part-time teaching positions.

The district employs 145 teachers.

Supt. David G. Philips said the district has had to reduce its budget by more than $1.2 million over the last two years, with few objections. “Over 10% of our budget has been reduced in the past two years, and no one has spoken against it. I think it’s something that’s admirable.”

The principal at Grace Thille Elementary School will also serve as principal of McKevett Elementary School because of budget cutbacks.
