The University of California Board of Regents in Los Angeles gave its stamp of approval Friday for a prestigious international research institute to use UC San Diego as the site for a research program, officials said.
The action will allow the Switzerland-based Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research to establish a team of scientists on campus Aug. 1. Researchers will study the cellular and molecular biology of cancer.
Webster K. Cavenee, director of the Ludwig Institute’s Montreal branch, will head the group of about 14 scientists.
“I am excited and challenged by the opportunity presented by this coupling of the strength of the Ludwig Institute with the research excellence of UCSD,” said Cavenee, in a release.
Under the agreement, Ludwig will pay all operating costs and share any profits that result from research efforts.
