Soviets Ask for Western Aid

Share

Paul Craig Roberts’ article (“Bush Is Buying Into the Soviet Quagmire,” Column Right, June 10) so clearly and correctly sets forth the futile and pointless attempt to bail out the socialist system that the Russian Communists have been so proud of for all these 70-plus years.

Instead of pumping hundreds of billions of taxpayers’ money, which the U.S. taxpayers don’t have to spare, supporting the socialist rules of economics, let President Bush demand from Gorbachev not only economic reforms but more important, political reform which would establish a system wherein the free-market capitalist system would have a chance of being nourished by whatever aid the West may then be willing and able to send.

To send billions now would only perpetuate the broken-down socialist system a bit longer, with no real benefit to the Soviet people, and certainly none to the aid givers.
