NATION IN BRIEF : OHIO : $5 Million Awarded Over ‘Love Surgery’
A jury in Dayton, Ohio, awarded $5 million to a woman who said a former gynecologist maimed her by performing his self-described “love surgery”--intended to enhance sexual pleasure--without her permission. Janet Phillips, 45, of Centerville, had sought $30 million in damages from James Burt, 69, and St. Elizabeth Medical Center, where he performed vaginal reconstructions, However, the jury cleared the hospital of fraud or negligence. Phillips said she suffered vaginal and bladder infections, incontinence and pain during sexual intercourse after the 1981 operation.
