Monterey Park City Councilwoman Judy Chu has been named Citizen of the Year by the Monterey Park Boys’ and Girls’ Club.
Chu has been on the City Council since 1988, and served as mayor in 1990. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology and currently teaches at East Los Angeles College.
“Chu has been a tireless leader, volunteer, and advocate on behalf of youth and youth issues,” the organization said in a statement.
She was to be honored Friday night at Luminarias Restaurant.
Proceeds from the dinner will go to the Boys’ and Girls’ Club.
The nonprofit group is trying to raise $300,000 for the construction of a center for teen-agers.
