Our full name is Roy Orbison Dunkirk. The folks liked the singer so much. Played his music all the time, they say. Were listening to his “Oh Pretty Woman” on the night dad had that gleam in his eye.

But that’s ancient history.

The years go by so fast, everything becomes ancient awfully quick. We retire in about 30 years. That’s nothing. A blip. The first 30 have gone by like a rocket.

Dad lived his whole life looking forward to the day he would retire. Spent each working day in a haze. Always talked about retiring. The thought kinda kept him fed and warm. And distant. He kept looking so far forward that he forgot about the floor he was standing on at the time. Well, finally he did retire. Got a gold watch from the post office. A year later, at 66, he was dead.
