Bid to Close Nuclear Plant as Unsafe Rejected

WASHINGTON — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced Tuesday that the aging Yankee Rowe nuclear power plant in western Massachusetts is safe enough to continue operating for at least another year.
The agency found possible problems with the strength and ability to withstand temperature change of the steel reactor vessel in the nation’s oldest operating nuclear power plant. The group of scientists, along with the New England Coalition on Nuclear Pollution, plans to appeal the decision in federal court.
