Volunteers for Drug Study

Share

The UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute is seeking volunteers 60 years and older who suffer from serious depression for a study of a new antidepressant drug.

The purpose of the study is to determine the safety and effectiveness of the drug on older patients. Participants, who must be available for six weeks, will receive either the antidepressant or a placebo. Assignments will be random and blind, meaning neither participants nor researchers know which medication the patient will receive.

People who have cognitive impairments, psychotic symptoms, evidence of thyroid disease, a recent history of substance abuse and those who are taking psychotropic drugs should not apply.

At the end of the study, patients who have received the placebo will have the opportunity to be treated with the drug at no charge.
