New Kid on the Block: Robert Strauss is going to Moscow, Clark Clifford and Lloyd Cutler are in the twilight of their careers, and Edward Bennett Williams is dead. With such D.C. movers and shakers leaving the scene, the National Journal has published its pick for the next “superlawyer”: Secretary of State James Baker. But writer John Moore concedes Baker might be more interested in a Pennsylvania Avenue address.

Cops, Robbers and Papers: A New York mugger, Benjamin (Benji) Rodriguez, whose brutal exploits were detailed in the New York Post, was arrested Wednesday night. He had avoided police attention until his chilling story appeared in the tabloid. Police accused the Post of running sensationalist stories at the expense of the safety of New Yorkers. But the paper pointed out that the 18-year-old had been arrested several times and had slipped through the system on every occasion.

Busted: Orval E. Faubus, the former governor who called out the National Guard to keep nine black students from attending all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., in 1957, has been honored with a bust in the state Capitol. Daisy Bates, who advised the students, said: “It’s an insult to the parents of the nine kids and what they went through.” Said Faubus: “The sculptor tried to catch my visage in a smile, which he has failed to do. But it’s recognizable.”

Fielder’s Choice: All the media talk of Marla Maples becoming the next Mrs. Donald Trump may be premature. The financially embattled developer is seeing an Italian model, Carla Bruni, a former girlfriend of rock stars Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton. That is if the New York tabloids can be believed. According to Trump aide Norma Foerderer, all it means is that her boss is playing the field.
