Alpha Microsystems Posts a Profit

Alpha Microsystems reported earnings of $171,000 for its fiscal first quarter ended May 26, contrasted with a loss of $2.5 million for the year-earlier period. Sales fell 6% to $12.6 million from $13.5 million a year earlier.

David Young, chief financial officer, said the profit is a result of a cost-savings plan begun during the past year. It was the computer company’s first quarterly profit in a year.
