A Ventura man was hospitalized after being shot outside a California Street restaurant, authorities said Monday.

Sarkis (Sammy) Abdulhai, a 23-year-old liquor store clerk, was shot about 10:30 p.m. Sunday as he walked from work to Carrows Restaurant, 227 S. California St., Police Sgt. Robert Anderson said.

Police arrested a 17-year-old Thousand Oaks boy as a suspect, saying he fired on Abdulhai because of an argument that the two had had at Clark’s Liquor Store, 165 S. California St., where Abdulhai works as a clerk.

According to reports, Abdulhai and two companions were walking from the store to the restaurant when they were confronted by the suspect.

After a brief exchange of words, the teen-ager produced a small-caliber automatic pistol and shot Abdulhai five times at close range, police said.

Abdulhai was taken to Ventura County Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for abdominal wounds, authorities said.

He was in fair condition Monday.

The suspect, whose name is being withheld, was later arrested and booked into juvenile hall.
