Nation IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : Computer Glitch Knocks Out Phones
Telephone service was disrupted for more than 1 million customers in Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania, and officials said the failure may be linked to outages in the Washington, D.C., area and California last week. A computer software glitch apparently caused the latest outage, but the exact cause was not known. Phone company officials said they were considering a range of options, including a computer virus and sabotage. Bell of Pennsylvania said the six-hour outage in the 412 area code could be related to new software.
