From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A plane carrying 362 passengers blew an engine just four minutes after taking off from San Francisco International Airport, raining debris on a San Francisco suburb but causing no injuries, an airport spokesman said. The plane returned safely to the airport but debris broke the windshield of a car, airport spokesman David Wilson said. When the engine below the left wing on an L-1011 American Trans Air charter burst, it dropped Frisbee-sized debris into the back yards of Daly City residents, Wilson said. The plane returned using its two other engines, but not before dumping thousands of gallons of gasoline into San Francisco Bay in order to meet landing safety requirements, Wilson said.
