Anti-Semitic Books
On June 19, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power African American Assn. sponsored a display of books in the DWP’s general office building. There among the other books were two notoriously anti-Semitic volumes, “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” and “The International Jew” (Metro, June 22).
Daniel W. Waters, DWP general manager and chief engineer, is to be commended for his immediate action in directing that the books be removed. These texts are hate-ridden diatribes against Jews. We only wish that officials at UCLA had acted as quickly when, in February, the African-American student magazine, Nommo, printed an editorial in support of a bookseller of these same two books. UCLA officials continue to debate the actions that they should take over this and other anti-Semitic incidents.
Racism and anti-Semitism must be deplored, loudly and quickly.
