Agreement Signed to Build Water Reclamation Plant
After months of planning and negotiations, the city of Los Angeles and the West Basin Municipal Water District signed an agreement Tuesday to build a $200-million water reclamation facility in El Segundo.
Once completed, the West Basin Project will take 100,000 acre-feet of treated sewage each year from Los Angeles’ Hyperion Treatment Plant and further process it for use in irrigation, industrial purposes and as ground water replenishment.
The reclamation facility, scheduled go on-line in 1994, will provide a reliable water supply for Los Angeles and the communities of the area’s South Bay region, including El Segundo, Inglewood, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Torrance, officials said.
