Nation IN BRIEF : PENNSYLVANIA : Schools Closed Over Religious Teachings
Pittsburgh school officials shut down a private summer program for nearly 600 disadvantaged youngsters at two public schools after learning the children pray, study the Bible and sing religious songs. U.S. District Judge William Standish denied a request Monday to block the school system from revoking permits for the “Fun with the Son” program at Allegheny Middle School and Northview Heights elementary school. The judge, however, scheduled a hearing for today on the program’s request for a temporary restraining order against the school system.
