Voters Tuesday chose Republican Thomas Ewing over Democrat Gerald Bradley to complete the unexpired House term of Edward R. Madigan in the 15th Congressional District.

With 378 of 496 precincts reporting, or 76%, Ewing had 17,870 votes to Bradley’s 9,876.

The special election was for the seat left vacant this spring when President Bush named Madigan, a Republican, to be his agriculture secretary. Ewing, 55, will serve the final 18 months of Madigan’s term.

Ewing, an attorney who has served in the Illinois House since 1975, was considered the favorite in the traditionally GOP district. Bradley, 63, is a Bloomington businessman and former Illinois House member.
