Folksy: A yellow ribbon made by Penne Laingen, the wife of former Iranian hostage L. Bruce Laingen, was donated Tuesday to the Library of Congress, which accepted the bow as a piece of American folklore. “I am pleased to present to your attic from my attic the mother of all ribbons,” Laingen said to Librarian James H. Billington. The embassy hostages were freed on Jan. 20, 1981, the day Ronald Reagan was inaugurated as President.

Copy Cat?: Dean H. Joachim Maitre of Boston University’s College of Communication has been accused of copying much of his May 12 commencement speech from an article by PBS film critic Michael Medved without crediting the source. Medved wrote about “unrelieved ugliness, horror and depravity at every turn” in a film, and Maitre told the graduates the same film contained “unrelieved ugliness, horror and depravity at every turn, I think.” There were 14 other paragraph-long similarities to Medved’s piece. “My article was all about upholding standards,” said Medved. “One of the most fundamental standards is not to pass off as one’s own the work of someone else.” Maitre could not be reached for comment.

He Shoulda Played: Mark Gastineau’s decision not to play ball with the New York Jets in 1988 is proving costly in his divorce dispute with ex-wife, Lisa. A New York judge ruled that Gastineau “wasted” a marital asset when he left the team, and therefore owes his ex-wife a chunk of those never-seen earnings--more than $100,000. Gastineau quit football so he could spend more time with then-fiancee, actress Brigitte Nielsen.

Hospital Report: The husband of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands has been hospitalized for depression, the government announced Tuesday. Prince Claus has a history of depression-linked disorders, which were acknowledged publicly in 1982. A government spokesman said Claus was admitted to a hospital’s psychiatric department with a “recurrence of complaints of a depressive nature.”
