S. Africa Repeals Apartheid Law

Share

Why does the African National Congress insist on holding President Frederik de Klerk and his government responsible for the “legacy of apartheid” (Part A, June 18-19)? This man has worked hard in the face of strong and bitter opposition to dismantle the country’s laws that enforce racial segregation. However, he cannot change a society’s attitude, which has been created over several hundred years. What he has done in the past few years for the people of color in South Africa is incredible. However, he has made many enemies along the way. ANC leaders should be grateful for his good intentions and now give him their unconditional support.

A legitimate opposition is always present in any healthy democracy. Yet, the fact should be emphasized that it was under the De Klerk government that the ANC was granted its legitimacy in the South African political arena. There is already a strong right-wing movement that is not pleased with the course of events currently happening. It would be a terrible setback if this arm of the opposition became the new leadership.

Bigotry still exists in South Africa. Many people are not happy with the movement to abolish apartheid. The current government needs the support of the ANC if desegregation is to continue. The legacy of apartheid may never be destroyed, but only time and education can change a society’s beliefs and values. Culture can be transformed, but tolerance must be practiced in all areas from all sides.
