Attorney Charged in Telling Witness to Lie

Adefense attorney accused of persuading a witness to lie during a 1989 murder trial was arraigned in Los Angeles Superior Court Wednesday on an eight-count felony indictment.

Leonard R. Milstein, 47, of Pismo Beach and formerly of Woodland Hills, is charged in connection with his defense in San Fernando Superior Court of Brad Millword of Palmdale, who was accused of two Antelope Valley slayings.

Millword, 33, was sentenced in July, 1990, to eight years in state prison after agreeing to plead guilty to voluntary manslaughter in one death.

In October, 1989, a jury deadlocked on a charge of murder in that death and acquitted Millword of another. Both killings involved drug disputes.

Prosecutors contend that Milstein convinced an alibi witness for Millword to give false testimony in exchange for a promise to represent the witness in other criminal matters.

In a May 23 indictment, the Los Angeles County grand jury charged Milstein with two counts of perjury and single counts of conspiracy to obstruct justice, subornation of perjury, bribery of a witness, solicitation of a crime and preparing and offering false legal documents.
