Upbraided: Norman Mailer, Arthur Miller and Grace Paley joined seven other writers in signing a letter criticizing British Prime Minister John Major for not responding to new death threats against Salman Rushdie. The letter said a new hit squad was dispatched--”seemingly with the Iranian government’s connivance”--to kill Rushdie, who has been in hiding since Muslims said his book “The Satanic Verses” blasphemed Islam.
