Sterling Marlin earned his first NASCAR pole, qualifying at 190.331 m.p.h. for the Pepsi 400 at Daytona International Speedway.
On Saturday he will try to end a 15-year, 204-race winless streak, fourth longest on the circuit.
“We’ve been close to getting the pole,” said Marlin, 34. “We finally got one.”
Davey Allison earned the other front-row spot in the starting grid with a qualifying speed of 189.909. Harry Gant was next at 189.865.
