GILDING THE LILLIANS

Share

While reading the review of Gish Jen’s book, “Typical American” (May 18), I was saddened and disturbed that she “hated the name Lillian . . . it sounded like a librarian.”

Jen is also quoted as saying that she objects to racial stereotyping (and rightly so), but evidently professional stereotyping is acceptable. The character, personality and names of librarians are as diverse as any other profession. However, they do have in common a love of books.

I find it hard to believe that Jen would speak so dismissively of the very profession that supports and aids authors. . . .
