Bush Raises Peanut Import Quota: President Bush approved a huge increase in peanut imports to offset shortages caused by last year’s drought in the Southeast. Bush raised the import quota to 100 million pounds through July 31. Since 1953, peanut imports have been capped at 1.7 million pounds annually. Bush acted at the urging of manufacturers and consumer groups, who argued that there was a shortage in the domestic market. The International Trade Commission had recommended in March that Bush permit up to 300 million pounds of peanut imports.
