A former minor league baseball player who fatally shot a 9-year-old girl sleeping in her parents’ car after an outing to an amusement park in Brooklyn, N.Y., was sentenced to 8 1/3 to 25 years in prison.

At the sentencing, Dorian Gray Daughtry, once a promising right fielder in the Seattle Mariners’ organization before a knee injury forced him to retire, turned to the family of Veronica Corales to say publicly for the first time that he is sorry about the girl’s death.
