2 Arrested in Drive-By Killing of Baby Girl

Sheriff’s investigators have arrested two Los Angeles men on suspicion of murdering a 15-month-old girl in a drive-by shooting in the Willowbrook area Sunday evening.

Darrell Whitson, 18, and Shon Yokely, 20, were arrested after investigators spotted a Jeep Cherokee thought to have been used in the fatal shooting of Michelle Jones. She was killed when a bullet struck her in the head as she clambered up the steps of her grandparents’ home. Her mother, Katy Jones, 21, and two uncles, John Paul Jones, 22, and Albert Jones, 26, were wounded.

Sheriff’s Homicide Detective Bob Havercroft said Whitson was arrested Monday afternoon in a park about two miles from the scene of the shooting. Yokely, whom investigators identified as the man who fired the gun, was arrested in his Los Angeles home early Wednesday morning. Havercroft said that Whitson and Yokely are associated with gangs. The victims, he said, were not.
