The Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District broke ground Tuesday on a new $2.1-million park facility in Oak Park.

James Meredith and Rick Fields, both members of the park district’s board of directors, attended a 10 a.m. groundbreaking ceremony at the park site near Kanan Road and Hollytree Street.

Oak Canyon Community Park is being developed on a 60-acre parcel owned by the park district, a public agency that purchases and develops parkland in the east county, Rick Johnson, a park district official, said.

The project will feature picnic areas, an archery range, bike path and ampitheatre, Johnson said. A parking lot, public restrooms, maintenance facilities and a caretaker’s residence will also be constructed.

The park will be developed in three phases, with the first phase involving 25 acres to be completed in about six months, Johnson said. The entire project is expected to be finished next spring, Johnson said.
