Chance, a dark blue Santa Cruz 70 from the Los Angeles Yacht Club owned and skippered by Bob McNulty, was first to finish the 36th biennial Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawaii at 9:59 (PDT) Tuesday night.

The 2 1/2-year-old boat also appeared to be the winner on corrected handicap time among 42 boats in five classes.

Chance, which led from the start, completed the 2,216-nautical-mile course from Point Fermin to the finish line off Diamond Head in 10 days 8 hours 59 minutes, well off the record of 8:11:01:45 set by Merlin in 1979.
