World IN BRIEF : BRAZIL : Bomb Found in Airline Luggage
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Inspectors in Sao Paulo spotted a ticking time bomb in a suitcase just before it was to be loaded onto a Japan Air Lines jet carrying 332 people to Tokyo, federal police said. The bomb “was strong enough to destroy the plane,” whose passengers included several former Brazilian soccer players, Police Chief Romeu Tuma said. Reports that former soccer star Pele was aboard were denied. The bomb was taken to an air base next to Sao Paulo’s Cumbica International Airport where it was detonated.
