U.S. sprinter Michael Johnson ran the season’s fastest 400 meters (44.17 seconds), and Jamaica’s Merlene Ottey won her 51st consecutive sprint race, taking the 100 meters in 10.84, at an IAAF-Grand Prix meet at Lausanne, Switzerland. Leroy Burrell won the men’s 100 meters in 9.96.
