Soviets Will Have to Import More Grain: Poor growing conditions have trimmed the Soviet Union’s harvest prospects this year and will force Moscow to import more than had been expected, the Agriculture Department report said. Grain output was forecast at 205 million metric tons, down 5 million from forecasts in June and far below the near-record output of 235 million tons last year. Grain imports, meanwhile, were forecast at 33 million tons in the year that began July 1, up 3 million from the June forecast. The report said “continued hot, dry conditions in spring grain areas” of the Soviet Union were the reason for the lower forecasts.
