AST Joins Group to Battle NEC: Personal computer maker AST Research Inc. of Irvine has joined a consortium led by International Business Machines Corp. whose goal is to sell computers in Japan. IBM and other computer and software companies are developing a Japanese-language operating system--the software that enables a computer to run different application programs. IBM founded the Open Architecture Development Group this year to try to break NEC Corp’s stranglehold on the Japanese PC market. NEC commands more than half of that market.
