Troops surrounding Palestinian guerrillas in refugee camps near the port of Tyre rounded up their heavy weapons Thursday as the soldiers tightened their grip on the south of Lebanon.

Security officials said the Palestine Liberation Organization handed over heavy and medium guns at three refugee camps near the port of Tyre, 48 miles south of Beirut.

Troops loaded several trucks with ammunition and weapons, including dozens of rocket launchers, mortars and heavy machine guns, and drove them to an army barracks in Tyre.

A Lebanese militia group, the Shiite Muslim Amal, also handed over some heavy arms, including five M-113 armored troop carriers, to the army in Tyre, security sources said.

Hundreds of Lebanese troops had pushed into the Tyre area Wednesday and surrounded the camps: Buss, Borj al Shamali and Rashidiyeh.
