Cardinal Jose Salazar Lopez; Archbishop of Guadalajara
Cardinal Jose Salazar Lopez, 81, archbishop of Guadalajara and the third of only five cardinals in Mexico’s history. Named archbishop in 1970, he was appointed cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1973. Mexico’s two remaining cardinals are Ernesto Corripio of Mexico City and Juan Jesus Posasdos, also of Guadalajara. In Guadalajara on Tuesday of an apparent heart attack.
