SEAL BEACH : City Joins Effort for Marine Sanctuary
The City Council decided last week to join the Orange County Coastal Governments Coalition, which is pushing for a marine sanctuary off the coast of Orange County.
As proposed by the coalition, the sanctuary would stretch from the county’s northern boundary to its southern one and seaward to Catalina Island.
The organization was formed a few years ago by Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and San Clemente to study offshore oil drilling and its effect on local communities.
Dana Point joined after it was incorporated, and the city of Avalon recently indicated its interest as well, said Cynthia King, the deputy city manager of Laguna Beach.
“We’re the only coastal city that’s not in the coalition and hopefully now we can become a member and work toward preserving our coast,” Seal Beach Mayor Frank Laszlo said.
