Disagreements over sexual matters dominated the Episcopal Church’s national governing convention in Phoenix. At issue were proposals on the ordination of homosexuals, extramarital sex among the clergy and same-sex marriages. Speculation circulated that bishops of the 2.5-million-member denomination might defer to the convention’s lay-clergy House of Deputies to initiate any action. In an extraordinary gesture the bishops, from a closed session, sent word to the deputies to pray for God’s guidance of the bishops.
