Encinitas’ Gerlach Moves Atop ASP Standings
Brad Gerlach of Encinitas on Sunday became the top-ranked professional surfer in the world by winning the Gunston 500 at Durban, South Africa.
It was the second event on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals tour that Gerlach has won this season. Previously he finished first in the Coke Classic in Australia.
Gerlach will next surf in Huntington Beach July 22-28 at the Op Pro.
BASKETBALL
The San Diego Police Athletic League girls’ 12-and-under team lost its final game of pool play during the National Junior Olympics in Cincinnati to finish at 1-2 but nevertheless advanced to the 22-team winners’ bracket.
The final loss came to the Indiana State champions, 68-27 in a game played Monday morning.
The San Diego girls play Potomac Valley (Md.) in today’s first round of the winner’s bracket.
