GUADALAJARA : No Sympathy for Fidel

Share

If Fidel Castro expected sympathy from the rest of Latin America at the 23-nation Ibero-American summit scheduled here beginning Thursday, Venezuela President Carlos Andres Perez has already shattered that notion.

Cuba must accept the new reality of a world no longer based on East-West tensions, Perez said in a pre-summit interview with the respected Mexican newspaper Excelsior. “Today, the only project is Latin America. . . . There is a way to be and act in the region that President Fidel Castro must recognize.”

In this new world, Cuba can play an important role in such areas as supporting the peace process in El Salvador, Perez said. Further talks aimed at ending the prolonged civil war in El Salvador also are scheduled for this week.
