Checking the Dial: CBS-owned oldies station KODJ-FM (93.1) has changed its call letters to KCBS-FM, believing the CBS Radio letters have a strong association with oldies formats. The station, which debuted in March, 1989, and at one time was known as KNX-FM, has not fared well in the ratings opposite veteran oldies station KRTH-FM. . . . Across the country, a Providence, R.I., talk show host, who along with a news anchor faked that he had been shot while taking a cigarette break outside the studio, has been fired. Steve White and news anchor Tom Moriarty were fired by WALE-AM for a “gross error in judgment.” Moriarty announced on the air that White had been shot in the head.
