Fluor Daniel Inc. said Wednesday that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has renewed a five-year contract with the engineering firm to oversee the building and expansion of weather service offices and radar stations around the country.

The federal agency is modernizing outdated equipment such as radar systems, some of which are left over from the 1950s.

The new radar can predict tornadoes, wind shear and heavy rain.

Fluor Daniel said it expects to engineer and manage $215 million worth of construction under the contract; the company declined to disclose how much it would earn on the project.

Over the next five years the company will oversee construction, expansion or modification of 98 weather service offices and 170 radar stations. Seventeen radar stations will be built at U.S. bases in Europe and Asia.

Engineering for the project is being done out of the company’s Kansas City, Mo., office.

Fluor Daniel Inc. is the biggest subsidiary of Irvine-based Fluor Corp., an international engineering and construction company.
