U.S. Oil Imports Fall: Oil imports slid by more than 1.1 million barrels in the first half of 1991 to 7.3 million barrels per day, the largest drop in nine years, the American Petroleum Institute reported. The API said in its midyear report that the 13.3% decline in imports resulted from higher domestic production, a weaker economy and inventory changes. Imports accounted for 45% of the 17.3 million barrels per day that Americans used in the first half.
