BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Dibble Withdraws Appeal; He Will Miss Three Games
Cincinnati Red relief pitcher Rob Dibble on Thursday withdrew his appeal of a three-game suspension for throwing at Eric Yelding of the Houston Astros. He will miss a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates that begins tonight.
Dibble met with National League President Bill White on June 18 and discussed the Yelding incident, a four-day suspension Dibble received for throwing a ball into the stands and hitting a fan at Riverfront Stadium on April 18, and a $1,000 fine imposed for a confrontation last year with a San Francisco police officer at Candlestick Park.
The other appeals are pending.
Nolan Ryan and the Texas Rangers agreed to two option years that would pay baseball’s all-time strikeout leader $4.2 million in 1992 and $3.9 million in 1993. The contract also includes a 10-year, $2.1-million personal services contract between Ryan and the Rangers that will begin after his retirement. . . . Right-hander Scott Garrelts of the San Francisco Giants underwent a 2 1/2-hour surgical procedure to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow, the team announced Thursday. Dr. Frank Jobe performed a surgery in which a piece of tendon from Garrelts’ forearm was attached to a ligament in his elbow.
