Wendy Bruce, top-ranked gymnast at the Festival, injured her knee and sprained her ankle during a practice session Wednesday at UCLA and withdrew from the competition.

Bruce, who said she was trying to get in a little extra practice time, landed wrong after a vault. She said neither injury is serious.

“We came in early to work out, and had just done beam and started to vault when it happened,” Bruce said from UCLA, where she is undergoing therapy. “I really wanted to compete here, but if I do, I may not be 100% at the World Championships.”

The Festival would have been Bruce’s third meet since coming back from a foot injury that kept her out of competition and off the U.S. national team for a year. Last month, she finished fifth at the nationals to regain a spot on the U.S. team.
