Despite a 17-1 loss in his final match, Lam Duong of Cal State Fullerton finished with a bronze medal at 114.5 pounds in Greco-Roman wrestling at El Camino College. In the dual meet team competition, Duong, competing for the West, was routed Thursday by eventual gold medalist Martin Strmiska of Columbus, Ga., and the South team. . . . Erika Von Heiland of Anaheim and Hoang Ly, a Costa Mesa resident and former Estancia High star, each won two singles matches Thursday as badminton play opened at USC’s Lyons Center. Von Heiland dominated both opponents, defeating Stephanie Woo of Daly City, 11-1, 11-1, and Denise Jones of Phoenix, 11-0, 11-4. She also teamed with Ann French of La Jolla for a 15-1, 15-3 doubles victory over Carrie Flynn of Palo Alto and Kristen Johnson of Williamsville, N.Y. Ly defeated David Shaw of Redondo Beach, 7-15, 15-8, 15-7, and John Garguilo of Miller Place, N.Y., 15-3, 15-2. But he could not match Von Heiland’s doubles success; he and Peter Baum of Palo Alto were defeated by Shaw and John Britton of Manhattan Beach, 15-2, 15-12.

Cale Carter of Orange and Mater Dei High was one of the heroes in the West’s 5-2 baseball victory over the North at USC’s Dedeaux Field. Carter had two hits and scored a run as the West improved to 2-1. . . . Margaret Mitchell of Costa Mesa scored three times and Tammy Delp of Mission Viejo once in the West’s 21-18 women’s team handball victory over the North. . . . Jennifer Tietz of San Clemente scored two goals and Sandy Vessey of Huntington Beach had four saves in the North’s 12-9 women’s water polo victory over the East at Cal State Long Beach. . . . Richard Russey of Fullerton scored three goals in the East’s 13-7 men’s water polo victory over the North. Greg Morris of San Clemente scored twice for the North.
