Israel and Peace in the Mideast
The chairman of Israel’s Labor Party, Shimon Peres, is about to face another challenge from his archrival Yitzhak Rabin for the party leadership (Part A, July 4 and 8). Though Rabin may currently be Israel’s most popular politician, Peres is by far the best suited to serve as prime minister, based on his highly successful term in 1984-86. As prime minister, Peres brought the defense forces out of Lebanon in a carefully staged withdrawal and significantly brought down the hyper-inflation he inherited from the previous Likud government. On the diplomatic front, his articulateness and peace overtures helped restore Israel’s dignity and standing in the international community as a peace-loving nation.
It will be a sad day for Israel if Peres is unseated as Labor’s leader.
