Church Rejects Bush Gulf Commendation
Episcopal Church bishops rejected by one vote a move to commend the Gulf War leadership of President Bush, the church’s most prominent lay member.
Bishops of the 2.4-million-member U.S. branch of world Anglicanism late Thursday killed a pro-Bush Gulf War statement that earlier won 52% approval from clergy and lay diocesan delegates at the church’s governing convention.
After spirited debate, the bishops voted 79 to 78 against endorsing a statement commending Bush for “commitment to prayer and his sensitivity to the needs of military personnel, their families and victims of warfare.”
