John J. Bartolomea; Retired Teacher

John J. Bartolomea, who taught for 30 years in the Los Angeles Unified School District, has died at a Woodland Hills hospital. He was 70.

A longtime resident of Studio City, Bartolomea died Sunday of complications of kidney failure, said his wife, Elizabeth Bartolomea.

Born in Los Angeles, Bartolomea graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles. He played the trumpet in several bands, including Louie Prima’s band, before becoming a cabinet assembler. Bartolomea graduated from Cal State Los Angeles and began teaching shop and a stage crew class at Maclay Junior High School in Pacoima. In the early 1970s, he transferred to Parkman Junior High School in Woodland Hills, where he taught special education. Bartolomea retired in June.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years; daughter, Katie Bartolomea of Studio City; brothers, Ed Bartolomea of Northridge and Dominic Bartolomea of Garden Grove, and sisters, Barbara Hanlon of Marina del Rey and Maggie Studts of Walnut.

A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Forest Lawn Memorial-Park, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Hollywood Hills. Forest Lawn Mortuary, Hollywood Hills, is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Bartolomea’s name to the Kidney Foundation of Southern California.
